  • D1 chips in electric cars already have 36% of the capacity of a brain
  • These new chips can handle 362 trillion operations per second, while the human brain is capable of a quadrillion
  • Elon Musk’s company uses microchips that increase their capacity by 486% per year

Tesla’s new chip will be “smarter” than humans by 2033 – its processing power is currently 36% of a person’s brain.

The D1 microchip can handle 362 trillion operations per second, while a person’s brain is capable of one quadrillion operations per second (that’s number one, followed by 15 zeros), study finds led by car and van rental company Vanarama.

The company made its prediction by analyzing past and current Tesla microchips to find that their capacity is growing at a breathtaking rate of 486% per year.

Elon Musk’s company is set to launch the new D1 chip this year, part of its Dojo supercomputer platform – and it will be a key part of the company’s Autopilot self-driving system as time goes on. extent of its development, according to Vanarama.

In the time it took you to read the graph above, the D1 chip will have performed 7.6 quadrillion operations.

A human brain, which triples in size during a baby’s first year and reaches full maturity by age 25, contains around 100 billion neurons.

Researchers have long said that there will come a time when AI will surpass the intellectual capacity of humans – although there is a wide range of opinions on when that will happen.

“It wouldn’t be crazy to believe that technology will become much smarter than humans in our lifetimes,” says Vanaram. “Microchips are currently able to function similarly to brain synapses, with researchers developing chips inspired by how the brain works.”

The previous chip, known as Hardware 3, performed 144 trillion operations per second in 2019. Prior to that, Hardware 2 could handle 72 trillion operations. The D1 chip is 30 times more powerful than the Nvidia device used just six years ago.

Looking at this growth rate, Vanarama explains that it would only take Tesla 17 years to reach the level of a mature human brain from the start of its development.

The study comes as Musk continues to tout the benefits of electric cars – saying on Twitter on Monday: “It won’t be long before we see gas-powered cars the same way we see steam engines today.” The residual value of gas-powered cars purchased today will be much lower than people think.

“These chips have been instrumental in Tesla’s existing automated driving features, but there’s so much more potential over the next decade,” Vanarama says.

“Does that mean it will be 11 years before we see self-driving cars on the road, or will it happen much sooner? Only time and innovation will tell.
