The unassuming weeks are always the most dangerous for college football, but especially so early in the season when the rankings are more guesswork than earned accolades. However, when you schedule an FCS school and pay them to come play non-conference patsy on the ride home or whatever, you better not lose.
Florida abandons one to Kentucky? It would be much worse if the Wildcats hadn’t won two of the last four meetings (now three of five). Notre Dame sleepwalks through Marshall only to be woken up by a fourth-quarter six pick when it was too late? Coming off the top of the competition with Ohio State is understandable, and as is the case with Gator head coach Bill Napier and interim Irish-turned-leader Marcus Freeman, this is their first year.
These fanbases are going to wake up Sunday feeling like crap, but not completely discouraged, wondering how the hell they’re going to spend the next dozen or so Saturdays in the fall, and even Saturdays in 2023.
For Texas A&M fans and those still clinging to hope that Scott Frost isn’t Nebraska’s worst coach of the new century, the sole purpose of waking up on Sunday is to see if the DA has fired the Neanderthals responsible for everything that happened against Appalachia. State and South Georgia.
We’ll start with the Aggies, because pointing out that the Huskers are gargling to pieces is a cliche. Jimbo Fisher, who spent part of the offseason in a public war of words with Nick Saban, also persuaded the media to rank his team in the top 10. I don’t know how he did it, and I honestly think that he doesn’t. I don’t know how he did it, but it happened when the team was 8-4 a season ago, including 4-4 in conference play.

A&M starting quarterback Haynes King hasn’t broken 100 passing yards, and the offense as a whole has been held within 200 yards by App State. Had it not been for David Achane’s 95-yard kickoff return after the Mountaineers took a 14-7 lead late in the third, this game would have been over midway through the fourth.
Fisher earned his reputation by putting together explosive offenses that could also run the ball, and year after year they have a quarterback whose only credentials are that Fisher is his coach, and we have to pretend he’s a candidate Heisman on a black horse.
I know King suffered a season-ending injury last year and his replacement Zach Calzada was traded to Auburn, but Calzada, King, Max Johnson — it doesn’t make a difference. If Jimbo’s expectations are competing in the SEC, he’s destined to fail and drag his QBs with him.
When it comes to Frost and Nebraska, he’s now 5-22 in one-score games, and the last shame he brought to the fan base was a 45-42 loss to Georgia Southern. . The Eagles have amassed 642 yards of offense, and any nightmares concocted by Bill Callahan or Mike Riley quickly turn from computer-scary to fond memories.
Georgia Southern quarterback Kyle Vantrease threw for 409 yards. The Eagles scored 28 goals in the first half, and it would have been more if they hadn’t committed a procedural penalty by attacking the ball inside Nebraska’s five. Running backs had holes to sprint, wide receivers had room to work, and Vantrease had enough pocket time to knit a winter beanie and maybe a scarf to go with it.
Like Fisher, offense was supposed to be Frost’s calling card, and he doesn’t even call the games anymore. He’s only a head coach by title at this point, and every time the cameras catch him staring at his feet, I feel like whipping everything in my hand on TV.
Fox’s Big Noon Saturday is heading to Lincoln next week for Nebraska-Oklahoma, and this weekend literally can’t go by fast enough. Nebraska AD Trev Alberts could offer Urban Meyer a live contract. I know it sucks to get mad, but it sucks to suck even more, and at least that’s not the reality of all the schools that finished Saturday disappointed.
And now a highlight of the college football slate that will hopefully put a smile on your face.
Pitt was unable to earn the overtime win over Tennessee on Saturday, but that’s not why we’re here. We are here to celebrate the rare instance of an obstacle being performed perfectly.
May I introduce you, Gavin Bartholomew:
I feel like 99% of the time the obstacles are strictly for show, much like an opportunistic bicycle kick. However, when used at the precise moment, it’s a guaranteed way to create a highlight reel, and you better believe one will stick with Bartholomew long after he’s done playing.
