- Model and designer Weston Boucher said testosterone therapy helped him heal a hormonal imbalance.
- He said his muscle mass, gym performance, energy, libido and mood all improved.
- However, inconveniences such as thinning hair, cost, and time commitment made her regret waiting any longer.
42-year-old menswear designer and model Weston Boucher says testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) restored his energy, focus and muscle gains, but he wished he had waited longer before taking it. ‘try.
“I think I would have had more peace of mind if I had waited until I was 50,” he told Insider.
Boucher said low-dose testosterone got her health and performance back on track, but it was a huge time commitment that had side effects like thinning hair.
After working out for months with no results, he noticed his testosterone had plummeted
A lifelong fitness enthusiast, Boucher had experience building muscle and had a cover with Men’s Health to prove it. But at the end of 2019, he returned to the gym after an injury and struggled to maintain his physique, keep up with his workouts and recover afterwards.
“My body just didn’t feel the same. I got my diet back on track, did the workouts I always did to get the best results, but I wasn’t getting any response. It was really frustrating,” he said.
He also had symptoms including fatigue, depression and brain fog — classic signs of low testosterone, experts previously told Insider.
Blood tests revealed Boucher’s testosterone levels were half of what they were the previous year, he said, dropping from about 1,100 nanograms per deciliter to 500. Although hormone tests aren’t part of the men’s routine checkups, Boucher said he’s particularly health-conscious. and chose to have them done as a precaution.
Typically, low testosterone is diagnosed as less than 300 nanograms per deciliter, but normal levels can vary widely from man to man, so large drops can cause symptoms even if the level overall is not in the “weak” range, urologist Dr. Ananias Diokno told Insider. .
Diokno says more men could benefit from routine hormone testing to understand their baseline levels in case symptoms arise.
Testosterone therapy led to more energy, muscle mass, and improved mood and libido
After trying lifestyle changes like nutrition to restore her hormone levels, Boucher asked her doctor about treatment options.
In January 2021, Boucher said he started therapy with low-dose self-injections twice a week, along with DHEA and HCG hormones to help offset side effects. At first, nothing changed. About two months later, he said his doctor opted to switch from muscle injections to subcutaneous (under the skin) injections, changing the way the hormone is absorbed. The change leads to dramatic improvements in his mental and physical health, according to Boucher.
“I had mild depression all my life, and it disappeared overnight. It was like a fog that lifted,” he said.
Healthy levels of testosterone are important for red blood cells, bones and muscles, all of which are crucial for strength and energy, and the hormone is also associated with general well-being, mental health and health. concentration, according to Diokno.
Boucher said after six months of treatment, his hormone levels were “promising”, his gym performance and libido had improved, and he had gained more than five pounds of mostly lean body mass.
The side effects were thinning hair, less emotional sensitivity, and a lot of time and money spent adjusting.
The benefits of hormone therapy came after extensive medical follow-ups and treatment adjustments to keep her health markers in balance, according to Boucher.
“You can’t just self-administer and say, thank you doctor, good life,” he said.
One of the consequences of the treatment was more water weight, thinner hair and shrinking testicles: not medically dangerous, but troubling.
“It was a real wake-up call,” Boucher said.
And while his depression was lessening, so was his overall emotional awareness.
“The biggest change was I wasn’t as emotional, but not in a good way,” he said.
According to the Mayo Clinic, common side effects of TRT include decreased testicle size and sperm count, which can reduce fertility, as well as a higher risk of blood clots.
Hair loss can be a side effect of testosterone injections due to increased levels of a related hormone DHT that can shrink hair follicles, according to Harvard Health.
Despite the positive results, he said he could have waited longer to try hormone therapy
Boucher said he was happy with the results of hormone therapy, but hesitant to recommend it.
Testosterone therapy can suppress natural hormone production, especially in older men, making it difficult to stop using it, experts say.
“It’s a commitment. If I could go back, I wish I hadn’t kicked in as soon as I did,” he said. “Anyone considering using hormones should do so as a last resort, because you can’t go back.”
Boucher said sharing his experience on YouTube has been incredibly positive, helping dispel the stigma against other men.
“I really want to be transparent about everything,” he said. “When guys aren’t talking about things, we take it with us, and it’s important to have support and hope. I feel like that started a conversation.”
